In this post, I discuss situations where students and researchers use ChatGPT to create text and to facilitate their research, not to write the full text of their paper or manuscript. We know instructors have differing opinions about how or even whether students should use ChatGPT, and we’ll be continuing to collect feedback about instructor and student questions. As always, defer to instructor guidelines when writing student papers. For more about guidelines and policies about student and author use of ChatGPT, see the last section of this post.

Recently, I’ve been doing a lot of work helping businesses to explore how to integrate AI to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their organisations, especially their HR and L&D teams.
Fear of AI hallucinations along with concerns for data privacy means that most business leaders in start with the assumption that the power and potential of AI lies in building bespoke LLMs - i.e. building an internal search + retrieve engine based on internal data using a chat interface.

AI is not only for engineers. “AI for Everyone”, a non-technical course, will help you understand AI technologies and spot opportunities to apply AI to problems in your own organization. You will see examples of what today’s AI can – and cannot – do. Finally, you will understand how AI is impacting society and how to navigate through this technological change.
If you are a non-technical business professional, “AI for Everyone” will help you understand how to build a sustainable AI strategy. If you are a machine learning engineer or data scientist, this is the course to ask your manager, VP or CEO to take if you want them to understand what you can (and cannot!) do.
Last week, I was lucky enough to speak with colleagues at the University of Toronto about where we’re at with AI and education and where we might go next.
Ever since OpenAI released ChatGPT, the internet has been awash in synthetic text, with suggested applications including robo-lawyers, robo-therapists, and robo-journalists. I will overview how language models work and why they can seem to be using language meaningfully-despite only modeling the distribution of word forms. This leads into a discussion of the risks we identified in the Stochastic Parrots paper (Bender, Gebru et al 2021) and how they are playing out in the era of ChatGPT. Finally, I will explore what must hold for an appropriate use case for text synthesis.

The pace of progress in learning sciences, learning analytics, educational data mining, and AI in education is advancing. We are launching this new publication, Learning Letters, to accelerate the pace at which science in learning moves from the lab to dissemination. The traditional publication process often takes 12 to18 months to move from article submission through to publication. We are interested in developing a new approach to publishing research in the “educational technology, learning analytics, and AI in learning” space. In particular, we want to reduce time to publication and put a sharper focus on results and outputs of studies.
Learning Letters features innovative discoveries and advanced conceptual papers at the intersection of technology, learning sciences, design, psychology, computer science, and AI. Our commitment is a two week turn-around from submission to notification. Once revisions have been made, the article will be published within a week of final editing. As a result, an article could move from submission to publication in less than four weeks, while having undergone rigorous peer review.
