Department of Chicano and Latino Studies and Spanish Program in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Sonoma State University seek a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Latinx Studies, with a focus on the diverse, multilingual educational contexts between Mexico/Central America and the United States, particularly California, and the broader cultures of the larger Spanish-speaking world, beginning Fall 2025.
The candidate will teach and develop lower-division and upper-division courses with the opportunity to create innovative classes in their area/s of expertise and interest within the Spanish Program and in Chicano and Latino Studies.
In addition to teaching and scholarship, faculty are expected to engage in service to the University, profession, and community. These responsibilities include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide communities, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participating in traditional academic functions.
Both Chicano and Latino Studies and the Spanish Program are committed to serving our core constituency of Latinx First Generation College students through excellence in teaching, and the candidate will contribute their experience and interest to this shared departmental priority. The Chicano and Latino Studies Department and the Spanish Program play an integral and growing role at Sonoma State University being a Hispanic Serving Institution as well as a student centered campus that prizes its commitment to teaching in the liberal arts tradition. Requisitos
Required Qualifications
To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have:
- Earned Ph.D. in Spanish or Latinx Studies or a closely related field by August 1, 2025.
- Evidence of effective undergraduate teaching experience and curriculum development in the areas of Latinx Studies and/or Ethnic Studies and Spanish language education.
- Experience working with diverse and underrepresented populations.
- An active program of research with at least one peer-reviewed publication.
- Native or near-native fluency in Spanish.
Preferred Qualifications
- Evidence of effective undergraduate teaching in Spanish language classes from beginner to advanced, with emphasis on diverse heritage learners. Evaluations to be submitted upon notification of interview.
- Demonstrated commitment to working with underrepresented communities and social justice advocacy.
- Demonstrated vision for building an interdisciplinary Chicano and Latino Studies Department and Spanish Program, or have relevant leadership experience and/or interest.
- Interest and/or experience in developing programs to strengthen a Hispanic Serving Institution.
- Demonstrated experience and/or vision for developing programs in order to prepare future Ethnic Studies, Spanish and bilingual teachers for our local communities.

All interviewees for the position will be required to submit 1) recent student evaluations, including at least 1 course taught in Spanish, 2) a statement of Research Interests and 3) a one page statement of Teaching Philosophy. In addition, the committee will request three (3) Letters of Recommendation after the first round of interviews for finalists. Official transcripts will be required at the time of hire.
